Pseudo-girl in China

In the common sense we do believe that a boy should be muscular like the athletes dressing jets jerseys playing football in the field and being drenched in sweat. A cross-dressing competitor has triggered a major controversy after participating in Hunan TV’s 2010 Happy Boys.
Liu Zhu, 19, from Sichuan province, who has been nicknamed “pseudo-girl” by his fans, has risen to stardom overnight with his cross-dressing performance in the competition.
Though Liu’s appearance has boosted the program’s ratings and popularity, the program had voted him out during the show on Saturday night
According to Chinese media reports, it is said that Liu’s vote-out was requested by the country’s State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT). The Beijing Youth Daily report said SARFT demands the country’s TV programs to promote positive and mainstream cultures, while the “pseudo-girl” and cross-dressing phenomenon, as part of a marginal culture, should be checked. But Hunan TV dismissed the news as a rumor.
“I have faced a lot of criticism about the way I look, but all I can do is speak less and do more.” Liu said.
He said he would quit the reality show if he was asked to dress up like a man for the camera.
He said he had been dressing up in women’s clothing since high school, adding that it was his “true identity”.
“I used to be very confused with my identity, but now all the problems have been solved.”
Happy Boys’ Chengdu division spokesman Zhao Zhe said: “Liu does not have any psychological burden about his identity, but like every other competitor, he too is under great pressure to perform.”

Happy Boys is not the only show in the country that has earned the public’s wrath for objectionable content.

Luo Yufeng, an Internet star who shot to fame with her bold remarks, was struck with eggs at a live broadcast of Dragon TV’s China Talent Show recently.

Qinghai TV’s talent show Blossoming Flowers is also under fire for staging a young female student named Diao Yang to dress up like a bunny girl.

The show has also had its contestants walk in a public square wearing bikinis.
Tony Liu, a music promoter based in Beijing, said, once this issue hits the mainstream, the TV station wins.
“If you look back at similar shows created by Hunan TV, you will see one thing in common: a singer who triggers a nationwide debate during the auditions round. So I’m not that surprised to see transsexuals this time around.”

“You can never be a real star through a talent show, and you will discover that in the end only the TV station will win.”
Zhang Zhihua, a lecturer at the TV and Journalism School at the Communication University of China, said a lack of a mature subscribe-and-watch system in the country is to blame for the current “bizarre” television content.
“China does not have a mature paid TV environment, which forces most of the satellite channels to rely on advertising revenue, which is only influenced by audience ratings.”
“In order to increase ratings, many shows try to challenge the audience by presenting subcultures and vulgarity, which is why SARFT needs to set up regulations from time to time.”
Zhang assured that the average viewer’s taste has not stooped to a new low.
Zhang added that though television programs need to make profits, they should still shoulder the responsibility of presenting positive ideas to the public.

Language Misunderstanding

When Chinese student Du Juan brought her American boyfriend home two years ago to use the toilet, her Japanese roommate became so upset that she shouted in English: “I hate you.”

Du, then 21 and an undergraduate at Bridgewater State College in Massachusetts, was shocked. So was her boyfriend.

“Later I realized that she didn’t literally mean what she said and that she was not aware of the full meaning of the word ‘hate’ in English,” said Du.
“It was more a problem with translation,” she added
.
Cultural differences can cause confusion about what words or even actions mean, an issue that has come to the forefront recently following the arrest of a Chinese doctoral degree student in New Jersey.
Zhai Tiantian, who studied at the Stevens Institute of Technology, has been accused of trying to set fire to a campus building and of making threats to a professor who gave him a low mark.
No physical altercation took place but Zhai reportedly said something along the lines of “at worst, I will risk anything on the line.” The professor called the campus police.
According to the indictment sheet, Zhai is facing the serious charge of making a terroristic threat.

For a few days, Chinese media mistranslated, or misunderstood, the charges and reported that Zhai was being charged with terrorism.
Some language experts have speculated that the disagreement between Zhai and the professor can also be chalked up to cultural and linguistic differences.

“What Chinese people regard as acceptable speech may be regarded by Americans as threats,” said Luo Gang, the Chinese Consulate’s Overseas Chinese Affairs consul. “This is an unfortunate incident. Even though Zhai intended no harm, he has done himself a great deal of harm.”

“While I don’t know enough about the incident to say what happened, it’s certainly true that, in general, people speaking a second language don’t always have a complete understanding of the weight of what they’re saying,” said 30-year-old American Eveline Chao, a Princeton graduate in English.
“So it’s certainly possible that someone might curse in a second language and not realize how strong the curse is,” said Chao.

Most languages also have a hierarchy of words to express anger. Some words are mildly offensive, while others are nearly unspeakable. But for foreign learners, this hierarchy may not be obvious. Just like athletes wearing oakland raiders jerseys play football in the field, they may say some offensive words when in upset.

“Some words come across a lot harsher in English than when said in Chinese,” said Kevin Jones, 23, an American student at the International School of Business and Economics in Beijing.

“There are still words in the US that people generally don’t say that might be more acceptable to say in Chinese,” said Jones.
Du, now 23, said she supports Zhai’s actions in fighting to save his academic career, but added he needs to learn more about communication in a foreign language.
“Chinese students in a foreign country must prepare more in terms of languages and conversation skills to avoid misunderstandings,” she said.

LeBron James with cavaliers jersey has a busy summer ahead. Maybe too busy to play basketball.

Cleveland’s superstar said Wednesday night that he’s “probably not playing” for Team USA this summer in the world championships in Turkey. James, who was a captain on the U.S. team that won a gold medal at the Beijing Games in 2008, is eligible for free agency after the season and is scheduled to film a movie. His crammed itinerary may make it impossible to play for his country for the third time. James also was a member of the 2004 Olympic team in Athens. H will not take part this summer and jeopardize his chances of playing in London in 2012.

James has played all three summers from 2006-2008, but Colangelo said there are “no free passes, regardless who it is.” Colangelo said he had not contracted James.

I’ll never just forget how to post up.

Guard Gilbert Arenas with wizards jersey was sentenced to 30 days in a halfway house for a felony gun conviction on Friday.

“We always have something going on with our team,” coach Flip Saunders said before Washington faced Charlotte trying to avoid a franchise record 14th straight loss. “It’s just one thing after another.” Saunders and Wizards players reacted with relief and some dark humor after finding out about three hours before facing the Bobcats that Arenas won’t be going to prison for bringing unloaded guns in the locker room in December. Arenas began serving his season-long suspension on Jan. 6.

Saunders said it puts a little bit of closure on the situation. Now he can move forward. Gilbert knows what he has to do so that’s basically it.

Just take a look at what Stan Van Gundy had to say about Rashard Lewis with magic jersey shoddy boxing out on the play in question.

Van Gundy blamed Lewis for failing to box out Josh Smith, who slammed home a game-winner to beat the buzzer. “Unfortunately, we forgot to box out on the weak side, and Josh was able to make a great play. We became spectators and didn’t block out,” he said. Lewis privately muttered something about Van Gundy’s offense on a night he was 2-of-9 for six points.

David Thorpe has already said that Lewis’ error last night could be a terrific teaching moment rather than a source of animosity between player and coach, and their on-court issues may soon work themselves out.

Center Nazr Mohammed with says serious back injury is tied to a nerve problem, but is targeting a return on the team’s current five-game homestand.

Mohammed went through a light workout Wednesday before missing his 17th straight game with what was initially called back spasms. Mohammed says he’s been feeling much better in the past week. He worked up a sweat while doing shooting drills Wednesday.

New comer Theo Ratliff has started in his place. Mohammed is averaging 8.2 points and 5.3 rebounds.
